About this trailer

The 2.4m mobile food trailer is built for one operator working alone. One person, one hatch, one counter run. That is the whole design brief of a 2.4 metre food trailer and it is why this size keeps selling. A solo operator at a Saturday market in Kimberley or a roadside site outside Vryburg does not need a two-person kitchen, and paying for one means towing weight and floor space that never earn their keep. What that operator does need is a unit that hitches to a bakkie, sets up in ten minutes, and passes an environmental health inspection without an argument.

Build and construction

The chassis is a fully galvanised steel ladder frame. Galvanising matters more on a food unit than on a utility trailer because the thing gets washed down at the end of every trading day, and a painted frame under a wet floor rusts from underneath where nobody looks. Body panels are 1.6 mm Chromadek steel over that frame, and the floor is aluminium checker plate with an anti-slip finish, which is the surface you want when there is water and oil on it and you are moving fast. The serving hatch is a single lockable panel on a gas strut, so it becomes an awning when it is open and a locked steel wall when it is not. Access is through a separate lockable steel door. Towing is on a 50 mm ball hitch with safety chains.

Key features

  • Full-length stainless work surface — one continuous run rather than joined sections, so there are no seams for product to collect in and no ledge to fail an inspection on.
  • Two-burner gas piping points, pre-installed — the pipework is in the wall before you take delivery, so fitting your own burner is a connection rather than a rebuild.
  • Stainless splashbacks on all walls — the walls wipe down as fast as the counter, which is where most of the closing-time labour actually goes.
  • 70 litre fresh and 80 litre waste tanks — waste is deliberately the larger of the two, because a unit that fills its waste tank before it empties its fresh tank has to stop trading.
  • Manual foot pump — no battery, no pump failure, no power draw. On a compact unit this is the reliable choice rather than the cheap one.
  • Lockable under-counter cupboards — stock stays in the trailer between trading days instead of being carried in and out.
  • 220 V shore power with two plug points, generator compatible — runs off a venue plug or off your own generator without rewiring.
  • Fixed passive roof vent — pulls heat out with no fan, no noise and nothing to break.

Applications

Weekend and weekday markets, roadside vending on a fixed pitch, school and sports club catering, festival and event trading, corporate function catering, and as a satellite unit for a restaurant testing a second location without signing a lease. It also works as a starter unit for an operator moving out of a gazebo and into something lockable and insurable.

Compliance and legal

At 1 500 kg GVM this trailer must be braked and registered, and it requires a code EB licence if your combination exceeds the limits for code B. Your tow vehicle rated towing capacity caps what you may legally pull regardless of the trailer rating. Food trading also requires a Certificate of Acceptability from your local municipality, which is issued against the unit and your operating procedures, not against the trailer alone. Tare mass is not published by the supplier and is needed for licensing, so confirm it with us before you register.

Questions about this trailer

Is 2.4 m big enough to trade from full time?

For one operator, yes. The counter run and the hatch are sized for a single person working a queue. Two people in a 2.4 m body get in each other way at the fryer, which is the point at which you want the 3.4 m unit instead.

Does it come with the cooking equipment fitted?

No. The gas piping points are installed and pressure-ready, but burners, griddles and fryers are fitted as an optional extra so you can specify the equipment your menu actually needs rather than paying for a generic fit-out.

What licence do I need to tow it?

It is rated at 1 500 kg GVM, so it is a braked trailer and must be registered and licensed. Whether you need code EB depends on your tow vehicle and the combination mass. Check your vehicle rated towing capacity first, because that is the number that actually limits you.

Can it run without mains power?

Yes. It is generator compatible on the 220 V side, and the water system uses a manual foot pump rather than an electric one, so water keeps working even with no power at all.

How long does it take to set up on site?

Realistically ten to fifteen minutes: level it, open the hatch, connect gas and power, fill the fresh tank. There are no stabiliser jacks on this size, which is one of the differences against the 3.4 m unit.
