A mobile chiller trailer answers a problem that ice cannot. Ice buys you hours. Refrigeration buys you days, and that distinction is the entire purchase decision. Build and construction

The body is a sealed insulated box on a galvanised steel chassis. Panels carry 75 mm of polyurethane insulation, and that number is the one to compare when you are quoting against other suppliers, because it decides whether the compressor cycles or runs continuously through a Northern Cape afternoon. A compressor that never stops is a compressor with a short life. The interior is lined in stainless steel with an aluminium checker plate floor and an internal drain, so the whole box hoses out between loads. The access door is heavy-duty and insulated with a magnetic gasket seal. Corner stabiliser jacks level it on site.

• 0 to 8 degrees held by digital thermostat — a setpoint with a display, not a dial, so you can prove the holding temperature rather than estimate it.
• 75 mm polyurethane panel insulation — the difference between a unit that cycles and one that runs flat out in a South African summer.
• High-temperature audible alarm — tells you the door has been left open while the load is still saveable. This is the cheapest component in the unit and the one that protects the most value.

• Corner stabiliser jacks and LED road lighting — stable when parked, legal when moving.

Compliance and legal

Rated at 1 500 kg GVM, so it is a registered, licensed and braked trailer. Confirm your tow vehicle rated braked towing capacity before purchase. If you are moving food commercially you fall under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act and its regulations on transport of perishable foodstuffs, which set requirements for surfaces, cleanability and temperature records. The stainless lining, the drain and the digital readout are what make those requirements achievable, but the record keeping is yours. Tare mass is not published by the supplier and is required for licensing.
