WhatsApp about this trailerAbout this trailer
A 500 kg mobile freezer trailer is not a chiller turned down. Operators who assume it is buy on price, run the unit through one summer and replace a compressor. Pulling a load from ambient to minus 18 and holding it there against a Northern Cape afternoon is a harder job than holding four degrees, and this build answers it at three separate points rather than one.
Build and construction
Panels are polyurethane injected sandwich construction at 100 mm, deep-freeze grade, against the 75 mm used on chiller bodies. That 25 mm is the difference between a compressor that cycles and one that runs continuously. Carried through every panel join and every corner is a full thermal break, which is the specification most often left out and the one that decides whether the body sweats at the seams, ices from the inside and quietly loses the capacity you paid for. The chassis is heavy-duty galvanised steel with corner stabiliser jacks, road-legal tyres and LED road lighting.
Key features
- 100 mm deep-freeze panels with a full thermal break — the two specifications that actually separate a freezer body from a cold box, and the two worth comparing across suppliers.
- Double perimeter magnetic gasket seal — two seals rather than one, because at minus 18 a single gasket carries frost and stops closing cleanly.
- Power-loss alarm as well as high-temperature alarm — a chilled load survives a few hours without power. A frozen load does not. Knowing at two in the morning instead of at seven is the whole value of this component.
- Freeze-resistant drain plug — the floor drain still works after a wash-down instead of icing solid, which is the small detail that keeps a freezer hygienic in practice.
- Digital thermostat with freeze guard — protects the circuit from short-cycling at the bottom of its range, plus internal and external digital readouts.
- Commercial deep-freeze condensing unit — rated for the pull-down duty, not a chiller unit asked to work below its design range.
- Hygiene-grade stainless lining and insulated stainless ceiling — washes out properly, which is what makes it usable for meat and seafood rather than packaged goods only.

Applications
Ice cream distribution, frozen meat and poultry wholesale, seafood transport inland from the coast, frozen vegetable and chip distribution to restaurants, game meat handling after a cull, event and festival operators running frozen product, and hire fleets supplying caterers. It also serves as overflow when a fixed freezer room is sized for an average week and the peak week arrives anyway.
Compliance and legal
Rated at 1 500 kg GVM, so it is a registered and licensed braked trailer. Confirm your tow vehicle rated braked towing capacity before purchase. Moving frozen foodstuffs commercially falls under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act and its regulations on the transport of perishable foodstuffs, which govern surfaces, cleanability and temperature records. The stainless lining, the drain and the dual readouts make compliance achievable, but the record keeping is yours. Tare mass is not published by the supplier and is required for licensing.

Questions about this trailer
Can I just run the chiller colder instead?
No. A chiller has 75 mm panels and a condensing unit designed for a 0 to 8 degree range. Asked to hold minus 18 it runs continuously, ices up and fails early. The freezer has 100 mm panels, a full thermal break and a deep-freeze compressor. They are different machines.
What does the thermal break actually do?
It stops metal or dense material bridging the inside of a panel to the outside at joins and corners. Without it those points conduct heat straight through the insulation, sweat on the outside, ice on the inside, and slowly rob the unit of capacity.
Why does the power-loss alarm matter more than on a chiller?
Because a frozen load has far less margin. Chilled product tolerates a few hours of drift. Frozen product that thaws and refreezes is a write-off and, with meat or seafood, a food-safety issue. The alarm buys you the hours that decide which of those happens.
Will it work off a generator?
Yes, but size the generator for compressor start-up load rather than running load. A deep-freeze compressor draws considerably more on start than in steady operation, and an undersized set will stall it repeatedly.
How much product actually fits?
The 500 kg figure is the product mass the circuit can pull down and hold, not a volume. Dense frozen boxes reach it comfortably. Bulky light product like packaged ice cream tubs fills the box well before the mass rating, so size on volume for those.
