Savuti XL Off-Road Trailer

The Savuti XL off road trailer is the long-body version of the Savuti, on the same 750 kg unbraked chassis: a 2 110 mm body, 590 mm deep, with a heavy-duty articulating coupler and 205 by 14 inch tyres. It weighs 380 kg empty and carries 370 kg, which buys length and a bigger nose cone rather than extra load capacity.

What the Savuti XL off road trailer is built for

The XL exists because camping kit is bulky rather than heavy. Three hundred millimetres of extra body length over the standard Savuti is the difference between packing a long-armed camping chair set flat and packing it upright against the tailgate. The body is zinc-galvanised steel, epoxy powder coated in beige, which is the finish that survives gravel travel best because chips do not become rust lines by the second season.

The articulating coupler is the specification to look at closely. On a rough track the trailer twists relative to the tow vehicle, and a fixed coupling transfers that twist into the A-frame and the tow bar. An articulating hitch lets the two move independently, which is why it is standard on this model rather than an option. Underneath, an 8-blade 36 inch leaf pack on a 1 250 kg axle carries a trailer licensed at 750 kg, so the running gear is never working at its limit.

Towing, licensing and payload

Licensed at 750 kg gross, the XL needs no service brakes and no braked coupling. The payload figure is the one to plan around: 370 kg, because the longer body and larger nose cone carry 100 kg more tare than the standard Savuti. Two adults camping for a week, with water, a fridge and a tent, sit inside that comfortably. A second spare, a full 80 litre water tank and a load of firewood do not. Your vehicle handbook states its own unbraked towing limit, and the National Road Traffic Act sets out what your licence code permits you to tow.

Where it sits in the range

Below the XL is the standard Savuti, 300 mm shorter and 100 kg lighter, with the same clearance and axle. Above it, the braked models carry more rather than pack more: 1 100 kg on a Bushbaby and 1 480 kg on a Hunter. Packing the XL

Two details decide how a long-body trailer packs. The first is the tailgate: the XL loads from the rear as well as from the top, so a long item goes in flat without lifting it over the side. The second is the nose cone, which at 650 mm swallows the gas bottle, the recovery kit and the tools that you never want inside with the bedding. What is left is a clear 2 110 mm floor that takes a folded awning, a table and a full set of chairs without stacking. The trailer is 3 225 mm overall, so it still fits a standard garage and reverses predictably on a tight campsite.
