About this trailer
The Savuti off road trailer is the compact end of the Venter off-road range: a 750 kg unbraked trailer with a deep body, a gas-assisted top lid and 300 mm of clearance measured to the bottom of the axle. It weighs 280 kg empty, carries 470 kg, and is sized for two people who camp often rather than once a season.
What the Savuti off road trailer is built for
Bush travel punishes a trailer in three places: the coupling, the suspension and the seals. The Savuti answers the second of those with an 8-blade 36 inch leaf pack on a 1 250 kg axle, well above the 750 kg the trailer is licensed at, and 195 by 14 inch wheels that absorb corrugation instead of passing it into the body. The body itself is deeper than an ordinary luggage trailer at over 500 mm, so tents, chairs, bedding and a fridge travel inside rather than strapped to the roof.
Access is from both ends, which is the detail owners notice first. A rear tailgate drops for long items, and the gas-assisted top lid opens the whole trailer at once, which matters when you are packing in the dark after a long drive. Gas bottles and jerry cans sit in exterior holders so they never share air with bedding, and four extension legs fold down to steady the trailer on ground that is never level where you want to camp.

Towing, licensing and payload
At 750 kg gross the Savuti sits on the right side of the braking threshold, so no service brakes are fitted and no braked coupling is needed on the tow vehicle. Empty it weighs 280 kg, which leaves 470 kg of payload. That is a full camping kit, water and a dual-battery fridge, but it is worth counting honestly rather than assuming, because water alone runs 1 kg per litre. Check the braked and unbraked towing limits in your vehicle handbook, and if you are unsure what your licence code covers, the National Road Traffic Act sets out the rules that apply.
Fitments and options
- Nose cone on the A-frame with a gas-lift assisted lid
- Nose cone with a water tank, filled and drained without opening the trailer
- Rooftop tent carried on the steel roof rack, which includes a table compartment
- Four fold-down extension legs, fitted as standard
- Spare wheel on the standard mounting
Each fitment is priced separately and each one adds to the tare mass, which comes straight off the 470 kg you are allowed to load. Order what the trips you actually take require, not the full list.
Where it sits in the range
The Savuti is the smallest of the off-road trailers we stock. If you need a longer load bed, the Savuti XL runs a 2 110 mm body on the same 750 kg chassis. If you tow heavier and want brakes, the braked models step up to 1 470 kg and beyond. The full range sits under off-road and camping trailers.
Living with a Savuti
Owners tend to judge an off-road trailer after the second trip rather than the first, and the things that come up then are the ones worth checking now: how easily the lid opens when the trailer is loaded, whether the jerry cans are reachable without unpacking half the kit, and how the trailer behaves behind the vehicle on a rutted track. The Savuti carries its mass low and short at 2 750 mm overall, so it follows the tow vehicle closely and reverses without drama on a crowded campsite. The service items are all ordinary ones, which matters a long way from home: bearings, standard 14 inch tyres and a common coupling, held as spares and fitted from our own yard when the trailer comes in for a check.

Questions about this trailer
Does the Savuti need trailer brakes?
No. At 750 kg GVM it falls under the braking threshold, so it is supplied unbraked and needs no braked coupling on the tow vehicle.
How much can the Savuti carry?
470 kg. The trailer weighs 280 kg empty and licences at 750 kg gross. Fitments such as a nose cone or a rooftop tent add tare and reduce that figure.
Will a rooftop tent fit on a Savuti?
Yes. The steel roof rack is designed to carry a two-person tent in several configurations and includes a table compartment. The tent is ordered as a fitment.
What ground clearance does it have?
300 mm measured to the bottom of the axle, on 195 by 14 inch wheels with an 8-blade 36 inch leaf pack rated at 1 250 kg.
Do you deliver the Savuti nationwide?
Yes. Delivery is free anywhere in South Africa on orders over R20 000, which every Savuti configuration exceeds. Collection from Hartswater is also available.
