Royal Horse Box

Height, width and a front ramp are what separate the Royal Horse Box from every other two horse trailer in the range. TRAILERS SA sells it new from Hartswater in the Northern Cape as a retailer, so the specification you read here is the builder specification, unedited. Nothing on this page is a guess, and where a figure is not published we leave the line out rather than fill it in.

Towing a 3200 kg trailer

GVM is 3200 kg, so the tow vehicle has to be rated for it and the coupling and towbar have to match. Fit a rated towbar and check the coupling against the load rather than the ball size alone. Run-in brakes are fitted, as the law requires on anything above 750 kg. Take the 1240 kg tare off the GVM and 1960 kg of payload remains, which is generous for two horses, tack, feed and water. The towing and licensing framework is the National Road Traffic Act, and your local licensing office will confirm the code your licence carries.

Where the Royal sits against the New Design Horse Box

Set side by side, this trailer is 455 mm longer in the body, 110 mm wider inside, 170 mm taller overall and carries 340 kg more payload than the New Design Horse Box. It also gains the front ramp, the removable stable doors and stainless steel detailing. The trade off is 60 kg more tare and a higher price. Riders with tall horses, or anyone who wants to lead a horse straight out of the front rather than reverse it down the rear ramp, will feel the difference immediately.

Who this trailer suits

Competition yards, breeders moving valuable stock and owners of larger horses are the natural buyers. The extra internal width gives a horse room to brace on a bend, and the front ramp means an animal that will not reverse can still be unloaded calmly. Yards that travel to shows most weekends tend to value the removable stable doors, which open the rear of the box up while you wait between classes. Build quality and rust protection

The body uses corrosion resistant rigidised zinc galvanised or electro galvanised steel, prime coated and finished in white paint. Stainless steel is used for the bullet hinges, tether rings and foot plate structures, which are the points that corrode first on a hard working horse box. Rinse the floor after each trip and leave the ramp down to dry, and give the gas lifts and hinges a look before every long haul. The design is registered in South Africa under number F2004/0491.
