Why the axle rating matters more than the payload

The interesting number in that table is not the 450 kg payload, it is the 1 250 kg axle sitting under a 700 kg gross rating. The running gear is rated well above anything the trailer is legally allowed to carry, which is why this model is bought by people who load to the limit every week rather than twice a year. Payload, braking and licensing

Published gross vehicle mass is 700 kg and the specification lists no brakes, which is consistent: braking only becomes a legal requirement above 750 kg. Note the tare, though. At 250 kg empty this trailer eats a third of its own gross rating before anything is loaded, so the usable 450 kg is genuinely lower than on the smaller Mossie. Weigh dense loads rather than guessing, and read the towing rules in the National Road Traffic Act rather than relying on licence codes repeated at the tow bar shop.

You are paying for wheel size and spring rate there, not for space. Two metres of deck takes fencing droppers, ladders, roof sheeting and pallets that will not sit flat on a shorter body, and the rails keep a loose load contained without needing a bin.
