Tandem-Axle Closed Body Trailers

A tandem-axle closed body trailer carries a full enclosed load on twin braked axles. Chromadek steel bodies run from 1.8 x 4.0 x 2.1 m up to 2.0 x 6.0 x 2.1 m, on 45 mm round axles with 5-PCD square braked hubs, leaf springs and 14 inch white mags.

Six metres of enclosed body at 2.1 m high is real freight volume, and at that size a single axle is not a serious option. Two braked axles carry the mass, hold the body flat under an uneven load, and give the stopping capacity a fully loaded box needs at highway speed. They also mean a deflating tyre does not immediately become a lane departure.

Body sizes step up in useful increments: 1.8 x 4.0 m, 1.95 x 4.0 m, 2.0 x 5.0 m and 2.0 x 6.0 m, all at 2.1 m internal height. Height is worth paying attention to, because a body you can stand up in is a body you can pack properly, and packing properly is what stops a load shifting.

Construction follows the same principles as the single-axle range. Chromadek cladding over a steel frame for colour retention and corrosion resistance, sealed joints throughout, and lockable reinforced doors that hold their alignment after a few thousand kilometres of corrugation.

Suspension is leaf spring on both axles, which is repairable anywhere and predictable under load in a way that matters more on a long haul than on a short one.
