About this trailer

This heavy-duty cargo trailer sits at the top of the range for a reason. Three thousand five hundred kilograms is where trailers stop being equipment and start being infrastructure. At that rating every component has to be sized for a load that is on the trailer every working day, not once a month, and the specification here reflects that throughout: 6 mm channel instead of 5, ten-blade springs instead of eight, 15 inch wheels instead of 14, and electric brakes on both axles rather than over-run on one. It is the heaviest unit in the range and the only one with genuinely commercial running gear.

Build and construction

The chassis is 150 by 65 by 6 mm open channel with a 100 by 50 by 6 mm A-frame, built as a heavy commercial ladder frame. The floor is 3.0 mm checker plate on cross members at 600 mm centres, which is the detail that stops a deck dishing under a point load like a pallet corner or a machine foot. The headboard is a 600 mm fixed panel in 75 mm square tube. Both axles are 1 400 mm on 10-blade heavy-duty leaf springs rated 2 000 kg each, on 15 inch wheels with a 15 inch spare on the A-frame, through a 3 500 kg coupler. Finish is 2K Duco.

Key features

  • Electric over-run brakes on both axles — not one braked axle and one free. At this mass, braking on all four wheels is what keeps the combination stable under emergency stops on a downhill.
  • 4 000 kg of axle capacity under a 3 500 kg rating — the running gear carries a genuine margin rather than working at its limit every trip.
  • 3.0 mm floor on 600 mm cross members — heavier plate and closer spacing than the utility range, because point loads are what actually destroy a commercial deck.
  • Ten heavy-duty lashing rings — enough anchor points to secure multiple separate loads to standard rather than strapping everything as one mass.
  • Heavy-duty drop-down tailgate with safety chains and pin lock — pinned rather than latched, so it does not work loose under vibration on a long haul.
  • Removable heavy-duty side rails — rails off for oversized freight, on for contained loads, with a dropside or mesh option available.
  • 15 inch wheels — larger diameter runs cooler at speed and at load, which is a tyre-life question over a commercial year.
  • 12 V LED with marker lights — marker lights are a legal requirement at this length and are fitted rather than added.

Applications

Commercial freight and distribution, building and civil contracting, plant hire moving compact machines, mining contractor support, agricultural bulk movement, and equipment hire fleets. It is also the unit specified where a business is running a trailer daily and the cost of downtime outweighs the cost of over-specifying the running gear.

Compliance and legal

At 3 500 kg GVM this is a braked, registered and licensed trailer, and towing it will require a code EC1 licence in most vehicle combinations. Confirm your licence code and your tow vehicle rated braked towing capacity before purchase, because at this mass very few passenger vehicles are legally capable. The electric brake system requires a controller in the tow vehicle, which is not supplied with the trailer. Loads must be secured to standard and marker lighting must be functional.

Questions about this trailer

Do I need a special licence to tow it?

In most combinations, yes. A 3 500 kg GVM trailer generally takes the combination past what a code B or EB licence covers, into EC1. Confirm your licence code and your vehicle rated towing capacity before you buy, because both cap you independently.

Is a brake controller included?

No. Electric over-run brakes need a controller installed in the tow vehicle, and that is fitted to your vehicle rather than supplied with the trailer. Budget for it and have it installed by an auto-electrician.

Why 6 mm channel instead of 5 mm?

Because the load is on it every day. At 3 500 kg with point loads from pallets and machinery, 5 mm channel and 8-blade springs are working near their limit constantly, and fatigue cracking follows. The heavier sections are what make it a commercial unit rather than a large domestic one.

What does air-ride suspension change?

It reduces shock transmitted into the load and into the chassis, which matters for fragile freight and on bad roads. It costs more and adds maintenance. For general building and plant work, the leaf springs are the right choice.

Can it be plated to a lower GVM?

That is a licensing question rather than a build one, and the answer depends on your registering authority. Talk to us before you order if you are trying to keep the combination inside a particular licence code.
