About this trailer

This multi-purpose trailer is specified for the way trailers actually get used. Most trailers are bought for one job and then asked to do six. This one is specified from the start for that reality. The sides come off, the tailgate drops, there are six lashing points in the floor, and the 1 600 mm bed is 100 mm wider than the standard three metre deck, which is exactly enough to lay a standard pallet flat instead of at an angle. It is the trailer a smallholding near Christiana buys once and stops thinking about.

Build and construction

Chassis and A-frame are both 76 by 38 by 5 mm open channel in a ladder frame. The floor is 2.5 mm checker plate steel, and the headboard is a 600 mm fixed panel framed in 50 mm square tube. The single axle runs 1 020 mm on 8-blade heavy-duty leaf springs rated at 1 600 kg, on 14 inch wheels with a 14 inch spare carried on the A-frame. Braking is fitted, through a 2 000 kg coupler, and the finish is 2K Duco rather than a single-pack enamel, which is the difference between a chassis that holds its colour for years and one that chalks in a season.

Key features

  • Removable mesh or solid steel sides — mesh for bulky light loads like garden refuse, solid for sand and rubble, off entirely for anything oversized.
  • 1 600 mm bed width — the extra 100 mm over a standard 1 500 mm deck is what lets a pallet sit square, which changes what the trailer can carry commercially.
  • Six lashing rings — anchor points in the floor rather than hooks welded to the rails, so straps pull down onto the load instead of outward against the sides.
  • 8-blade leaf springs on a 1 600 kg axle — rated above the 1 500 kg GVM, so the suspension is not working at its limit on a full load.
  • Braked with a 2 000 kg coupler — also rated above GVM, which is what you want on a district road with a trailer that is genuinely loaded.
  • Drop-down rear gate with safety chain — the chain sets the gate as a loading ramp extension rather than letting it swing free against the lights.
  • Spare wheel on the A-frame — out of the load space and off the deck.
  • 12 V LED lighting — sealed units survive the vibration and the wash-downs that kill filament lamps on farm roads.

Applications

Smallholding and farm work, building and renovation loads, landscaping and garden refuse, general commercial haulage on a pallet basis, plant hire support, and municipal maintenance crews. It is also the size most commonly bought as a first braked trailer by someone stepping up from a 750 kg non-braked deck and finding it was never enough.

Compliance and legal

At 1 500 kg GVM this trailer is braked and must be registered and licensed. Your tow vehicle rated braked towing capacity and its tow bar rating both cap the combination independently of the trailer rating, and the lower figure is the one that applies. Loads must be secured to standard and may not project beyond the legal limits without the required marking. Tare mass is not published by the supplier and is required for licensing.

Questions about this trailer

Is the single axle enough, or should I take the double?

For loads inside 1 500 kg on tar and reasonable gravel, the single axle is enough and it is cheaper to run and to tyre. Take the double axle if you are regularly at full load, towing long distances, or carrying anything where a blowout at speed would be serious.

What is the difference between 2K Duco and normal paint?

Two-pack Duco cures chemically rather than by drying, so it is harder, holds gloss and resists fuel, oil and UV far better. On a trailer that lives outside it is the difference between repainting in three years and repainting in ten.

Will a standard pallet fit?

Yes, and squarely. That is what the 1 600 mm bed width is for. On a 1 500 mm deck a standard pallet has to go in at an angle or overhang, which is why this width matters commercially.

Can I take the sides off completely?

Yes. The mesh or solid side panels are removable rather than fixed, so the trailer works as a flat deck for anything oversized. The headboard is fixed and stays.

What licence do I need?

It is a braked 1 500 kg trailer, so it must be registered and licensed. Whether your combination needs code EB depends on your tow vehicle. Check the vehicle rated towing capacity in the owner handbook and the tow bar rating on the bar itself.
